Watch Out for Irregular Plurals!

In Italian, many parts of the human body have a unique grammatical rule: they are masculine in the singular, but become feminine and end in "-a" in the plural.

Here are the most important examples you need to know:

  • il braccio (the arm) - le braccia (the arms)
  • il dito (the finger) - le dita (the fingers)
  • il labbro (the lip) - le labbra (the lips)
  • l'orecchio (the ear) - le orecchie (the ears)
  • il ginocchio (the knee) - le ginocchia (the knees)
  • l'osso (the bone) - le ossa (the bones)
